My ramblings

Any time now…

Filed under: Family, Life — Lance at 10:38 pm on Sunday, December 30, 2007

2007 can go away at any time now.

This has been, on the balance, a pretty crummy year emotionally, a good year professionally and about a flat year physically. My grandma on my mom’s side is very bad now, to the point where almost everyone in our huge family is coming into town over the next couple days. This is by no means a surprise, she has been going downhill for years and years. It still stinks, especially in a year that has been hard on all of our grandparents.

Anyway, I am ready for a better 2008. I have a couple resolutions but I don’t really feel like sharing :-)

See you all in 08!

I have an iPod, now what?

Filed under: Tech — Lance at 4:35 pm on Thursday, December 27, 2007

So I am probably one of the latest adopters to get an iPod. So I loaded my music and subscribed to the podcasts I like. Now what? Is there anything cool to load onto the iPod (aps, hacks, etc…)? Similarly, I have almost no new music and/or newer bands. In fact, I think the newest full album I own is Built to Spill from like 2003.

So any good albums/artists would you recommend?

Any good podcasts?

They are amusing at least…

Dems are frustrated about war vote.

If you’re frustrated, just imagine what the people who voted for you are feeling like.

Most factually incorrect quote of the day comes from Rep. Obey:

Democrats “have tried every way known to man to bring this war to a conclusion.”

Except, of course, refusing to fund the war. Oh, I guess that is a big one. It is the only thing you have absolute control over dummies so you obviously haven’t tried it. You could simply let the Pentagon run out of money. The war is unpopular enough where it is kind of a no-brainer. In an unpopular war, the opposition congress has the war president’s policy in their hands to crush at their delight.

What am I missing here folks? I’d love to know. This is what separation of powers is all about. Yet, the only reasons I can figure out why Democrats backed off this game of chicken is political cowardice.  They believed that Republicans could somehow spin them forcing the issue (i.e. what they essentially ran on and won in 06) as a negative so they backed off when it came to make a brave, meaningful decision. Of course, the Democrats are going to try to spin this to their base as a reason to get more of a majority and the Presidency secured.

Doesn’t that seem like a consolation prize at this point for Democrats? Honest question. Wouldn’t a partial government shut down with a weak-in-the-polls Bush administration excite the base and fire them up more than giving into Bush and admitting they can’t get hardly anything done in Congress without a filibuster proof majority (something that is very difficult to attain) or a President playing for your team?

These are honest questions. I almost feel bad talking to people on the left who are as cynical as me because they went from very high hopes to utter and complete disappointment in less than a year. And let’s not even talk about it if Hillary Clinton is nominated. I am sure the emo will be plastered across the internets from people on that side of the party.

I said I wanted a strong opposition party to any President (Democratic or Republican) and I am glad to see that there was enough congestion in Congress to pass very few really stupid bills this year.  If that’s the only benefit, I consider it a success. However, I am not a Democrat and I am happy just to maintain the status quo. And however much I disagree with many Democratic views, I believe they should fight for what they think is right. That’s what got them elected, that’s why they are there. And when you’re an opposition Congress, you have to bring it and be prepared for messes knowing that re-election rate is high in the House and that you have little to lose in the Senate (about half as many Democratic Senators are up for re-election as Republicans).

And I’ve been in the position where I’ve been pissed about it. And while many of the people who are pissed about this on the Democratic side aren’t going to be voting Republican anytime soon, they might decide not to show up for that critical day in November.

I just can’t understand how or why Democrats in congress are playing themselves so weak on this.  Can anybody else seriously explain it to me?

German Food = Good

I love German food. Maybe it is the heritage speaking but it really tastes right to me. But ever since Jen and I decided to go out to dinner before we left for her parent’s house on Friday, I have been craving Rheinlander so that’s what we are doing.

Rheinlander has a red headed step-child named Gustav’s that is pretty decent as well.  The prices are a bit cheaper and it is good if we don’t want to drive all the way across Portland but The Rheinlander is where it is at.

Start with the fondue and a bowl of lentil soup. Then go for any of the schnitzels, sausages or (one of my favorites) Klopse. End with a piece of apple strudel and you have one of the perfect meals.

I am so hungry right now just waiting for it. Rheinlander is becoming my Case Bonita. It is disturbing.

What kind of key positions would those be?

Here’s a joke that would have been funny 15 years ago and I am still going to say it:

“If you look at my cabinet, I had more women in my cabinet and on my staff in key positions, including chief of staff, than any other governor probably in Arkansas history,” Mike Huckabee today.

I think another Arkansas governor would have something to say about that:

There’s a good joke to be made about missionary here.

Watching the Iowa Republican Debates

Ron Paul sounds almost exactly like Jim Mora:

Anybody else see (hear) it?

Abandon NH, Abandon the Race

Filed under: 2008 election, Politics — Lance at 2:45 pm on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

I am not a Fred Thompson fanatic but some of these comments are ridiculous.

Actually, I take that back. Our entire electoral process is a disaster.  A process that routinely pumps out candidates that have the right momentum going into the primaries. A process that caters to a privileged few who live in meaningful states full of selfish people unwilling to compromise with any candidate that suggests the incredulous: change the primary format.

Because Fred Thompson is skipping out on New Hampshire, he is screwed. End of story. People of these states who hold such sway demand personal politics and instead of picking the person most capable of the position. They choose to pick the person most compromising to their arrogant, subjective standards. If somebody doesn’t make enough appearances in Manchester, the whole state is going to give the candidate the screw because they Just. Don’t. Care. About. Them. (Oh the humanity!)

The self-importance that these people hold during this time serves as a stunning contrast to how little sway they hold nationally (where Iowa is going to be lucky to get another visit after January 4th). This is the same primary process that vetted such high quality candidate the last time around: Senator John F. Kerry. A senator that couldn’t find a way to win against a President pulling stunning approval numbers, all because he arranged for some upsets in early primary states.

This isn’t what I want. This shouldn’t be what the parties want.  The only people I think that still want this setup are the people living in those states. Fantastic for them but unless I get the urge to move, I’m wondering when I will get the opportunity to vote in a meaningful primary?

LOL Russians

Russian company to take over LiveJournal.

Putin is training them well. Acquire power then twist it to make it as good for your interests as possible.

Not that I think it is a conspiracy or anything.

Let’s just say I am glad I started posting content on my own website too. After all, if I get poisoned with some sort of radioactive isotope or imprisoned for speaking out against the government of Russia, I’d like to know they couldn’t just willy nilly erase my shiz.

Oh, I am so looking forward to this.

EDIT: A new Cold War is coming to LiveJournal (click for poster sized version):
